DSLR moneypit (for love)
I’ve been investing in some accessories to make an upcoming series of client videos extra sweet.
The job is for a high profile, Scottish business sector, and the series of five x 5 min films has to appeal to international buyers. So they’ll get gorgeous colour and depth of field with the Canon 5D mkII, I’ve got some very tasty wired and wireless sound options to make sure we get the best audio and they’ll get some awesome compositions with excellent speakers – I know because I’ve made radio docs about this sector in a the past.
So, I picked up a camera slider from Glidetrack in Paisley, I bought a vari ND filter from Genus to cope with bright skies if we shoot outside (there are some exotic locations planned, aye, exotic for Scotland), and I’ll be cutting this project in Final Cut Pro which I should take delivery of in the next week or so.
I’ll shoot some test footage and load it up to Vimeo for some practice.
The DSLR is a money pit. I started off shooting corporate vox pops and promos and used an £800 Canon Vixia HF100 HD camcorder. Once I bought a couple of radio mics and a tripod, that was it – sorted (more or less). Then last year I decided to step up a gear and get into the cinematic look with affordable DSLR! Ha! It’s never-ending.
I’ll start earning some money now and stop buying gear…but there’s that follow focus and rails I need. Oh and the French flags…
