My two Canons: 5D mkii and HF100
I was filming a school concert staged by pupils from Banchory Academy at Woodend Barn this afternoon.
I used my Canon 5Dmkii, but wish I had used my little Canon HF100. The camcorder is so quick to set up, has more than 2 hours of continuous recording time depending on the size of the card and the recording quality settings (and if it’s plugged into the wall) , and is lightweight for moving around. The DSLR on the other hand requires more attention and preparation.
It also has to be focused. This is problematic in low light, at a distance from the performance stage, when each new performer replaces the last in a matter of 60-90 seconds, and when I’m trying to vary the composition – all while hoovering up as much available light as possible.
I’ve got a gig on Friday at which I’ll use the Canon HF100.
