Time lapse coincidence

Time lapse coincidence

Ha! I got a phone call from a client asking if I could do a time lapse photography project for them – just three days after I found the very gadget required to do time lapse photography.

I wrote a blog post about finding this timer remote gadget among my equipment.

While I have done some time lapse photography before, the brief from the client was on a larger scale than I have previously done and so I have been thinking a lot about the parameters of the project, how to make it work, and how to keep costs down from the client.

How do you set up a camera – for any length of time up to 18months – so that you get good quality images, which are framed identically (or as near as possible), and in which the camera is protected from the elements of cold, heat, water and dust? What do I have to set in place so that I don’t have to be on site day after day, chaperoning the camera, yet still be able to ensure that the settings are appropriate, and the camera is secure and well-looked after. There also have to be systems in place for the regular maintenance of the camera, replacement of batteries and downloading of the images.

Suddenly, a fun project takes on a multitude of complexities.

Projects like these are interesting and make my line of work enjoyable. If that wasn’t the case I may as well pack up and take that full-time, well-paid job in PR.
