Woodend Barn’s first video production

One of my clients has just completed their first video production and I’m really excited! Two team members from Banchory-based arts venue Woodend Barn recorded the interview in the video below. I think they’ve done an excellent job.

Woodend Barn is hosting Scottish dance company Smallpetitklein for a five-day residency and it was the obvious candidate for a first effort in coordinated video production.

I did 90 minutes prep the night before in which I worked out a training plan, and delivered it in 45 minutes the following morning! Unfortunately I was unable to be present to chaperone them through their first recording, but you only have to look at the video here to see how well they did.

They used a Flip HD, a handheld camcorder like a mobile phone, and so Mark did the camera work and Jo did the presentation. I’ve just finished editing it and uploading to YouTube. We’ll seed tomorrow (starting with Facebook), and I’ll reach out to various online audiences to generate interest.

A few of comments:

• They got excellent audio (I laboured that in the training session, and if they keep that in mind, they’ll do well)
• They got a steady image
• They made it interesting by showing some dance BEFORE the interview
• They made it short (I cut it back from 7:30 mins to 4:09 mins)
• They got the important facts out
• The presenter was engaged, smiling and friendly

There are many ways they can improve in future videos, like improving composition, better presenter control of the interview and so on, but these are all learning stages. This is a very exciting project to be working on and I look forward to seeing how the team (staff and volunteers) at Woodend Barn learn, create and develop their own style.
